A good daily oral cleaning routine is very important to dental health, but even diligent brushing and flossing will not remove 100% of plaque buildup on teeth. To remove the remainder plaque, a professional cleaning needs to be performed every six months. X-rays are obtained once per year for a deeper look into the bones and soft tissues of the oral cavity.

During a professional cleaning, a certified dental hygienist uses special dental tools to do a deep clean, including between teeth and at the gumline. A scaler is used to scrape the plaque away, and then the teeth are polished with a special toothpaste. The scaling step is typically the longest part of the cleaning and the least liked. To keep scaling to a minimum, patients need to closely adhere to a good daily cleaning routine.

Flossing is then performed, and debris is rinsed from the mouth. The end of the cleaning signals the dentist to come in for a thorough examination of the mouth and teeth. Regular exams are also critical for good preventative care. Our dentist will check for evidence of cavities and gum disease. Possible future problems are also assessed. If found, a treatment plan can be made to make sure the problem does not progress.
